Last weekI wrote about some great movie quotes to put on a custom leather keychain. This week, I’m delving into something even nearer and dearer to my heart: quotes from books. If you have a conversation with any bibliophile, they’ll be able to quote a line from their favorite book--something that made them laugh, or cry, or understand the world in a new way. If you’re looking for the perfect way to say something to a loved one, there’s no better source than an already cherished line from a book.
While I recommended the movie quotes be engraved on custom leather keychains, I recommend these get engraved on custom leather bracelets. The quote can wrap around the outside of the bracelet, while the title of the book and the author can be engraved on the inside. This will create a personalized bracelet that will be cherished forever.
Anne of Green Gables(Lucy Maud Montgomery):“Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it”
There’s a reason thatAnne of Green Gableshas remained a timeless classic, as relevant to children today as when it came out in 1908. Anne’s optimism and creativity are hard not to love. This line, in particular, can act as a mantra on hard days. It would act as a perfect gift to someone you know has been going through a rough patch lately, or to a child who is heading out into the world soon.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire(J.K. Rowling):“We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.”
We’ve all been in a situation where we know what the right thing to do is, but we also know the consequences of doing it are hard. Perhaps it’s speaking up against inappropriate workplace banter when you fear it might make you the odd person out, or maybe it’s carpooling to work instead of commuting because it’s better for the environment. Whatever your personal challenge, there are times when you face the same choice Harry was warned about inthe Goblet of Fire: the choice between what is right and what is easy.
I love theHarry Potterseries, in part because I grew up alongside the characters. At the end of the day, when you pull out the magic and the war, it’s a story about coming of age. This quote comes at a critical time in Harry’s life, as he hovers somewhere between childhood and adulthood. As such, it would make a perfect gift for your college-aged son or daughter.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland(Lewis Carroll):“It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”
Lewis Carroll had a quirky way of looking at the world which was underscored inAlice’s Adventures in Wonderland. When I think of the book, I first remember theDisneymovie, with its sinister smiling cat and its quaint Alice in her little blue dress. Only in recent years have I actually read the book that movie was based on and begun to appreciate the true beauty of the world Carroll created. This line is a perfect example of Carroll’s ability to pack a hard punch with very few words.
Sometimes, we grow apart from family or friends. Other times, we grow together. This would be a beautiful gift to give a person you’ve renewed a relationship with. It would also be perfect for someone you know is overcoming an addiction or another hard habit, as it would remind them that they do not have to be defined by their past.
The Fault in Our Stars(John Green):“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once”
The Fault in Our Starsis a newer novel, only released in 2012. Though it’s marketed as a young adult novel, if you haven’t yet read it, it comes highly recommended. This line, in particular, holds with it all the beauty and naivety of young love. We all know the feeling described: It’s one of the most wonderful and terrifying feelings in the world. This quote would be perfect for a customized bracelet for your spouse, reminiscent of your earlier days as young lovers.
The Two Towers(J.R.R. Tolkien):“There is some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for”
Tolkien's novels are densely packed with wisdom, but of everything he wrote, this is the line that most stands out to me as meaningfully important. It can be easy to become pessimistic--to let the world tear you down. When those moments come, it’s these words from Tolkien I find most beneficial. If you know someone in your life who has been dealt a heavy hand lately or has begun to feel disheartened by the world at large, remind them of Tolkien and the good that can still be found in the world.
The Ersatz Elevator(Lemony Snicket):“If we wait until we are ready, we’ll be waiting the rest of our lives”
Sometimes, it’s beneficial to plan and assess risks. Other times, life calls for a leap of faith. Transitions are never easy, and it can be tempting in a transitive period of life to be frozen by fear. Snicket hit the nail on the head with this one. Sometimes, you can’t wait until you’re ready: sometimes, you just have to jump into the icy depths of life and pray that you’ll figure out how to swim.
This line could be perfect for someone who you know is facing a tough transition, such as a child heading to college or someone who is planning a major career change. It shows your support of them while also giving them a gentle nudge to be brave and take a leap of faith.
